When I first started designing printables 4+ years ago I would try to be selective of what I would physically print. I used to do mock layouts in photoshop to make it look like they were printed because it was so expensive to print off my full colored pages. I even used to even design thinking about how much ink a printable would use. I often do sets that use just one color, Like only mint for my moving stickers, and with my small printer that uses a single tri-colored cartridge I would run out really quickly! When we moved back stateside I decided to try out Instant Ink. I started off with only 100 pages a month. I’m currently up to 300 pages a month to print for only $10.81 a month. I did the math. $129.72 for 3,600 pages ( 3 cents a page.) I was paying $45 every two months. It was crazy and I was limiting myself on what I was creating. I started doing printables when we were living in Japan. Holiday decoration isn’t nearly as popular as it is here in the states. (More on this later and how it changed the way I think about shopping.) I wanted something simple and that was easy to store and move.
Hp Ink has allowed me to print to my hearts content and not feel guilty about it.
Lets do some more math. So my subscription to instant ink is $10.81 I spend $8.36 on a 250 page ream of cardstock (110 lb.) from Sam’s club. For me this is the one “Hobby” that I loose track of time doing. Designing, Printing, Creating. (Throw in some laminating too, because y’all know I love me some laminating!) So I can spend under $25 a month on hours of making. which fits into my budget.
So what exactly is hp instant ink?
Its a subscription for ink shipped to your home by HP.
How much does it cost?
That’s up to you and your printing needs. If you print less than 15 pages a month, you can opt into a free plan. Here is a screen shot of prices as of Sept 2019. They do charge tax of course so my monthly bill is $10.81.
You can change your plan monthly but if you downgrade it won’t kick in until the next month. If you are upgrading you can choose to update current cycle or have it kick in the next cycle.
What kind of printer do I need?
If you head over to HP INSTANT INK you can check and see if your printer is compatible. I bought my printer 4 years ago on a black Friday for $30! Most newer HP printers are compatible but check their list to see if yours is!
What if I need to cancel my plan?
No problem. There isn’t a yearly fee just monthly payments so you can cancel whenever with no penalty.
How many cartridges will i get?
Depending on how much you print and the ink it uses will determine how many cartridges you will be sent and how often. Because the printer communicates via the internet with your account it lets them know when to send. Now that I am up to 300 pages a month I get sent multiple cartridges at a time.
What if I don’t know how much I will print?
Just like above you can change your plan at any time. You can start at a lower page count and then upgrade if needed. Keep in mind that you will have to wait for addition cartridges to be sent to you if you end up running out. So if you know next month you will have a ton of printing to do, upgrade in advance to make sure you have the ink you need to finish up your printing jobs.
